The Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) has been funded for five years by the Wellcome Trust, UK (the largest UK biomedical charity) and was officially launched on 01 May 2006. MAP is a joint project between the Malaria Public Health & Epidemiology Group, Centre for Geographic Medicine, Kenya and the Spatial Ecology & Epidemiology Group, University of Oxford, UK. The main objective of this project is to develop a detailed model of the spatial limits of Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria at a global scale and its endemicity (intensity) within this range. The last attempt to map malaria risks worldwide was in the 1960’s. For many areas of the world this, unfortunately, still represents our best information on malaria risk. You can also see some of the first products of the initiative, the spatial limits of malaria in 2005, on the World Swim for Malaria website when you view the country maps. A very detailed description of MAPs aims and objectives can be found at our website (www.map.ox.ac.uk). World Swim for Malaria and Madness for Malaria are great initiatives.
